Affordable, SAFE
and a GREAT Choice
TRAILERBOATING HAS BEEN the
domain of the power boat for years
until technology and design caught
up, creating the opportunity for those
who wish to try sailboat touring from
their hitch. Trailering a sailboat is as
easy as it can get and the new Hunter
Henderson, an in-house designer at
Hunter and their team have made a
bunch of great decisions with this
boat’s design.
The 216 is the largest thermo-formed boat in the world, and it won
the NMMA’s highly-coveted
Innovation Award in 2004 for its pioneering design and ACP construction
methods. ACP is the most modern
production boat building method
being used today.
It starts on the outside with a
tough outer shell that is both weather
and scratch resistant. The outer layer
of the ACP construction is a BASF
plastic called LURAN-S. This plastic is
specially formulated to provide a
beautiful glossy finish that is very
easy to maintain. Dirt and grime are
easily removed without the use of
harsh chemicals.
The outer plastic surface of the
structure works in combination with a
urethane foam backing to provide
nearly 5 times the impact resistance of
traditional fiberglass. Instead of thin
brittle coating on the outside, the ABS
backed Luran-S plastic is both thick
and flexible. Aside from its beautiful
and durable finish, the ACP construction provides yet another benefit,
The keel lifts with a hydraulic assist to
make it light and easy for the whole
family to use.
216 is a great example of how these
new daysailers (and overnighters as
we call them) can provide a great
option for affordable cruising.
